How to Stay Healthy and Sane While Self-Isolating

We are being asked to react in ways that we didn’t expect, specifically to self-isolate…stay home. Self-isolation is a practice that requires us to be careful about our mental and physical health. We must be healthy and happy.
Physical activity and movement are the only way I know of to accomplish either. It is not new that physical activity and movement are important. It has been there since the beginning of time. It was vital for survival that you could run, walk, jump and climb, as well as lift, carry, crawl, throw, catch, and transport things.
Even though physical activity is not as essential as it was in prehistoric times, it is still important. This is even more true if you are unable to move or have limited mobility. You can and should engage in physical activity regardless of your age, physical limitations, or mental abilities.
It’s great to be out and about with friends, but it doesn’t mean you have to do all the work and get the mental stimulation and physical activity that you need. Moving is one of the easiest and most effective ways to incorporate both physical activity and mental stimulation into your daily life. People who have good physical and mental health move regularly and naturally indoors and outdoors.

It is important to include activity that doesn’t require a lot of thought, time, or effort in your daily life. Natural movement activities include standing while speaking on the phone, walking while watching a movie or television program, and dancing to your favorite music. Everyday movements such as sweeping, mopping, or turning off the light can add up over the course a day or week. They all matter, no matter how small or large.
Sometimes I get asked, “Does sitting in rocking chairs count?” It depends. It depends. There are health benefits to rocking but there are also other ways to move that meet the definition of natural movement and physical activity. Rocking in a chair is a better option than doing nothing.
Let’s say it this way: Find your natural movement. Make it a daily routine. Be consistent, conscientious, passionate. Every occasion is an opportunity to be active. You can move, no matter how you sit or stand. People who move naturally are happier and healthier than those who do not.
Keep healthy… Stay sane… Be active.
